As a parent, it can be overwhelming to try and identify the best martial arts program for your child. You want them to experience the important benefits of martial arts, but also want to ensure they are learning in a safe and supportive environment.
Most martial arts programs focus on the physical aspect but neglect the mental and emotional aspects of martial arts training, leading to an unbalanced learning experience for kids. Plus they often lack specializations that cater to children with different abilities.
Our personalized kids’ martial arts program delivers all these important benefits. By focusing on the top 3 challenges parents face, we give children a well-rounded experience while helping them reach their full potential in a safe and supportive learning environment.
Parenting can be difficult in today's world, but it doesn't have to look like a daunting mountain. With our Kids Martial Arts classes and family-friendly atmosphere you can help your child take back control of their mental health. Our family welcoming atmosphere will provide the support needed for them to develop resilience, bolster their well-being, and set themselves up for success no matter what comes down the road. Guiding kids through the complex world of smartphones and tablets can be a struggle for parents. But with too much screen time comes issues like poor sleep, dropping grades and lack of physical activity - all detrimental to your child's health. That’s why we've developed an innovative Kids Martial Arts Class that guarantees fun in a secure environment while providing beneficial exercise at the same time.
In today's increasingly digital world, one of the significant challenges kids face is a lack of social interaction. With screen time dominating their daily lives, children often miss out on valuable opportunities to develop essential communication skills & forge meaningful connections with their peers. This absence of face-to-face interactions can hinder their emotional growth, empathy, and ability to navigate social situations. It's crucial for parents and educators to recognize this challenge & actively encourage kids to engage in activities that foster genuine social engagement & interpersonal development.
Martial arts training is more than just learning self-defense techniques; it's a journey of empowerment, discipline, & confidence. Here's how martial arts lessons can be truly transformative:
Through our expertly designed curriculum & experienced instructors, your child will learn the importance of fitness, nutrition, & healthy habits. Not only that, our classes will help them build strength, coordination, flexibility, & cardiovascular endurance, all while having fun & building lifelong friendships with our community.
We teach kids crucial life skills such as discipline, respect for others, & self-confidence. Respect is emphasized both for oneself & for others, including parents & teachers. Self-discipline is essential to advance through the belts & learn the more complex techniques. Learning these skills builds character & helps kids develop into well-rounded adults who are ready for the challenges that lie ahead in life.
In a world where children are increasingly sedentary, martial arts classes provide an excellent way for kids to stay active and healthy. Regular exercise helps reduce obesity, build strong bones & muscles, improve cardiovascular health, and boost brain function. By enrolling your child in our martial arts program, they'll get the physical exercise they need while learning valuable self-defense skills and techniques. Not only that, our community of making friends will positively impact your child's self control, & discipline.
These classes provide a supportive environment where kids can learn valuable self-defense skills while also building their self-esteem. As they progress through the ranks and master new techniques, children will experience a sense of accomplishment that instills a strong sense of self-worth. Additionally, martial arts training promotes discipline, focus, and respect, further contributing to a well-rounded and confident individual.
Tyler started his Kickaro’s journey at The Goddard School. Like many pandemic babies, Tyler struggled acclimating to group activities after spending most of his life in isolation. We tried soccer, gymnastics, and an art group, but every activity resulted in Tyler clinging to a parent’s leg, refusing to participate. When Mr. Michael offered karate sessions at his preschool, we hoped it would be an activity Tyler was finally comfortable enough to participate in and we were thrilled when that turned out to be the case. After 6 weeks of sessions, it became clear that Tyler finally found an activity he would not only participate in, but enjoyed. As parents, we were so relieved and happy for our boy.
I was hesitant when Michael approached me after one session and asked if Tyler would like to continue his karate journey at the dojo. Our previous experiences left me weary that he would be comfortable in that environment. But Michal surprised me. He started explaining why Tyler might be ready to try, noting things about my son that I wasn’t sure other people noticed. His incredible observations in only 6 short sessions gave me hope that this could be different.
And it was. Though Tyler was hesitant to enter the dojo on the first visit, within minutes, Michael had him out on the mat practicing moves. The smile on his face upon receiving his white belt was priceless. We started coming once a week, but Tyler quickly became attached to the sport and was eager to progress in his karate journey. At only 4 years old, he already began to understand how to create a goal and more importantly, how to achieve it. In February, he received his yellow belt and was so ecstatic he insisted on calling everyone we know on the drive home to tell them the amazing news. He quickly decided he wanted to come multiple times a week, to work on a new goal of an orange belt, which he received just this May.
We are a year and a half into our Kickaros journey and we have seen such growth in Tyler. Physically he is stronger, but he is also more confident in his interactions. He has become a much better listener and is ok with the fact that sometimes you have to work for the things you want.
Kickaros has had such an amazing impact on Tyler and we are so thankful that karate, and all of its benefits, was introduced to our lives. But I cannot claim that you wouldn’t reap the benefits of karate at other venues. What I know for sure is you will never find another Michael. Michael is what makes Kickaros so special.
Michael has a gift with his students that is unmatched. His kindness, patience and ability to connect with each and every child is incredible to witness. When he speaks with a student, he doesn’t just hear them - he reaches them. Every child wants to be seen for who they are and Michael does just that. His personality combined with his passion for karate is the difference that Kickaros has made in Tyler’s and so many other children’s lives and is why we recommend Kickaros to everyone we know. We hope every child interested in karate is lucky enough to walk through Michael’s door.
Gratefully,
Casey Gold
Our family’s journey with karate began in 2020 when my younger son Andrew (then 6) expressed interest in learning. After researching locations, we received a friendly and welcoming phone call from Mr. Michael who said he was excited to meet Andrew. I mentioned that I would have to bring my older son Joshua (then 7) along. Michael suggested that Joshua experience the free trial class as well. I asked Joshua and he didn’t seem too interested and said it ‘wasn’t his thing’. A lot of that skepticism was being intimidated by the physicality karate involved. I told Joshua he had to go anyway so he may as well give it a try!
So we headed to our first trial class…Michael has a way of engaging kids right off the bat and making that first karate experience a fun one. Andrew was sold on that first class, but Joshua still wasn’t sure, despite having a great time.
I told Michael we would think about it, and we had several talks with Joshua about trying new things even though they’re hard. Michael told us he saw himself as a young boy when he watched Joshua, and could relate to his concerns. After a lot of thought, Joshua decided he would give it a go. We weren’t even sure if Joshua would last 6 months at that point.
Fast forward through several years, and Joshua attended classes with Andrew, moving through many belt levels together. We watched Joshua’s strength and confidence grow. At one point he even started helping out with the younger class.
Eventually Andrew had to stop karate lessons due to conflicts with other sports, but Joshua persevered. He wanted to continue on his own even though he had originally started as a tag along! He still attends 2-3 classes per week, and has hopes of one day earning his black belt.
Sometimes we watch his classes and marvel at how far he has come. Joshua (now almost 12) has grown into a strong, confident young man and a leader, a far cry from the timid boy that first stepped foot on the mat. We owe a lot of his confidence to the instruction at Kickaro’s. Michael believes in Joshua and pushes him to be the best version of himself. We are so grateful for the positive influence of Kickaro’s!
Extremely Thankful,
Jessilyn Westhoff
Oh Boy! Where do I start? From the time that my son was 3 we tried putting him in different activities that he could be engaged in, get some energy out, meet some new friends and start his life with some new things and experiences. I signed him up for lacrosse, soccer, running and nothing...he hated everything. I felt like I had to pull teeth to get him to do anything. I would have to go out on the field with him and literally make him kick a soccer ball by grabbing his leg and kicking the ball. I gave up. It wasn't worth the stress, the money or commitment when he hated it.
I came across an ad for Kickaro's Martial Arts back in November and decided to give it a try. It was $20...what was the worst that could happen?! He hated this too? Although karate and martial arts was something that I wanted him to love for a couple of different reasons. It is instilling important life skills like discipline, self-control, and perseverance.
We went to meet Mr. Mike and he had a little one on one which he absolutely loved and expected that everytime we went back to Kickaro's. Well let me tell you...karate was no different than soccer and lacrosse. He cried, clung on to me and didn't want to participate in the large group at all and even refused to put on the uniform. There was one day that Mr. Mike literally grabbed his leg and made him kick a bag. I laughed because it reminded me of the time at soccer where I had to do the exact same thing. Mr. Mike and Ms. Kris were amazing with him. They worked with him every class and through our perseverance and support it has definitely made a world of difference. We would leave every class and he would tell me that he loves class but is scared around all of the other kids. I kept bringing him and encouraging him that he could do it and he would be great. Eventually he decided that he wanted to wear the uniform which was huge for him. He doesn't like "new" clothes that he doesn't pick out and for him to put on the uniform every class and keep wanting to go back made me so happy.
Fast forward to about the beginning of March when he got his "paper" to get his Yellow belt. He ran out of class and was so proud that he could take his Yellow belt test and wanted our family to be there to cheer him on.
Karate seems to have been a turning point for him, and it's heartwarming to see how he gradually became more comfortable and even proud of his accomplishments, like earning his Yellow belt. The fact that he wanted his family there to cheer him on speaks volumes about the progress he's made and the support he feels from those around him.
We are so proud of where our son has come from and where he is going.
We have poured so much love, patience, and support into helping him find his passion. Despite the challenges along the way, we remained persistent and dedicated, never giving up on him.
This journey and hurdle hasn't been easy but we didn't give up and kept going. We are looking forward to seeing what his future has in store for him, he's on a great path, and there's so much potential ahead for him…!
SUPER EXCITED Mom,
Jessica Gallagher
We’ve been attending Michael Kickaros Martial Arts for the last 12 years. My oldest son started classes when he was 8. Prior to attending the class he was shy but super energetic. Upon starting classes with Mr. Michael we could see a great change not only did he have a physical outlet he learned how to be more disciplined. He was always excited to go to classes and Mr. Michael took excellent care to ensure his safety while he grew with his craft.
When our second son was diagnosed with ADHD and needed assistance focusing his doctor recommended Martial Arts to assist him with his self control, focus and his “can’t do it” attitude. We knew there was nowhere else to take him other than to Mr. Michael. His dedication and understanding has helped our son soar. He has the confidence to make friends, he shows more focus and ability to get his tasks done and he doesn’t get himself down if he can’t complete something. He has learned that if he practices he will succeed. He is always excited to show his younger siblings what he learned in class that day.
Last year we signed up for our 3 year old, we hoped that the classes would help him as he is very rambunctious and stubborn. Mr. Michael assessed him and he was so excited to sign up however, after a few weeks he was having trouble focusing through the entire class. He really wanted to be there but it was just too hard for him to stay focused. Mr. Michael was so helpful and he worked with our family coming up with different solutions until we found the right fit. After a few months of adjustments he seems to be excelling and learning how to listen, follow directions and stay focused on the task. Our family is so grateful to Michael Kickaros Martial Arts and will continue to attend classes there and watch our little ones succeed in Martial Arts and life!
One Happy Momma,
Jessica Strolin
Beyond physical fitness and self-defense skills, martial arts classes often emphasize the development of important life skills such as discipline, respect for others, goal-setting, teamwork, and leadership. Instructors may incorporate these themes into their lessons through discussions, role-playing activities or games that promote positive behavior.
Incorporating Our Top 5 Fundamentals of Every Kids Martial Arts Class:
Warm-up exercises are an essential part of any martial arts class. Kids will typically start with a series of stretches and cardio exercises to prepare their bodies for physical activity.
Our instructors will demonstrate various techniques such as kicks, punches, blocks, and stances that kids will learn during every class.
After the instructional demo, kids will practice these techniques with a partner or on punching bags/pads wit ha soft touch to improve their form & self defense techniques.
Beginning a martial arts program can be daunting, but there's nothing to worry about! A beginner's class typically includes an introduction to the basics of the chosen martial art, including basic strikes, blocks, and stances. The focus is on developing fundamental skills that serve as a foundation for future training.
Absolutely not! No hidden fees – just one straightforward monthly membership fee that unlocks a world of incredible benefits. Our commitment to transparency ensures you can confidently enjoy all the fantastic perks without any unexpected costs. Join our growing community of thrilled members who have already discovered the exceptional value we offer.
We maintain an average class size of just 15-20 students at a time in our Kids Martial Arts classes.
This smaller class size ensures that our dedicated instructors can provide individualized coaching and guidance, helping your child develop and excel in Jiu Jitsu at their own pace. Plus, with a close-knit community of fellow students, they'll enjoy a supportive and engaging learning environment.
Although any sport or activity has some risk involved, our team of certified instructors follow safety protocols to ensure a safe and supportive environment for our students. In fact, unlike sports which has one adult supervising an entire team, we have multiple instructors monitoring a room at all times making sure everything runs smoothly. We understand that each student has their own unique limits and we encourage rest and feedback during exercise.
Our classes are tailored towards accommodating students regardless of their weight, age, abilities, or energy levels. Astonishingly, many of our students have tried sports and other athletic activities only to realize it’s not for them. Martial arts is often a sanctuary in these cases as competition is eliminated and each student only attempts what they feel comfortable doing.
There are a lot of girls in many of our classes as there are boys. Girls love martial arts just as much, and get the same fulfillment out of it as boys do. Also, girls are just as tough as boys in our classes. Some are even tougher! So you don't have to worry about your little girl getting hurt, or feeling scared because she'll be practicing with boys. In fact, the boys may even be the ones who are scared.
We are incredibly grateful for the patience, dedication, and support that Mr. Michael has shown toward our son throughout his karate journey. When our son first joined in 2022, he was hesitant and scared to participate in Mr. Michael's karate classes. He would often cry and scream when it was time for class, and entering the class was a huge challenge. Those early days were tough for him. He didn’t want to participate in any of the karate activities, and it felt like an overwhelming experience for him, especially since he was growing up during the COVID pandemic.
As parents, we were naturally concerned and unsure of how to help him adjust. But Mr. Michael’s understanding, care, and patience stood out from the very beginning. He recognized that our son needed extra support, and he did something we truly appreciated—he made special exceptions for us. Though no parents were typically allowed during class, Mr. Michael welcomed us in, allowing us to be by our son’s side during the sessions. In fact, at times, we had to participate in the karate activities with him to make sure he stayed engaged and completed the class.
Mr. Michael’s ability to adapt his approach, while still maintaining the discipline and structure that karate demands, was remarkable. His strictness with the rules was balanced perfectly with his compassion and patience. This combination created a space where our son felt safe and encouraged to slowly step out of his comfort zone.
Now, after two and a half years of training under Mr. Michael’s guidance, we’ve seen an incredible transformation. From those early days of fear and hesitation, he has now progressed from a white belt to a blue belt. This represents not just a physical achievement but a testament to his mental growth and confidence. He has advanced from a white belt to a blue belt, and we are so proud of him—and we know that Mr. Michael is proud of him as well. Our son’s goal is now clear: he is determined to achieve his black belt, and with only five more belts to go, that dream feels closer than ever.
Throughout this entire journey, Mr. Michael has been instrumental. His patient and loving approach, his respect for our son’s process, and his unwavering encouragement have made all the difference. Mr. Michael’s belief in our son, even when our son doubted himself, has helped him develop resilience and a deep love for karate.
We cannot thank Mr. Michael enough for everything he has done, and we look forward to watching our son continue to thrive under his mentorship. The impact that Mr. Michael has had on our son’s life will stay with him forever, and for that, we are eternally grateful.
Thank you, Mr. Michael, for being an extraordinary teacher, mentor, and role model. Our son’s growth, both in karate and as a person, has been deeply influenced by your care and expertise. We look forward to enrolling our daughter at Kickaro's as soon as she turns 3 so she can follow in her brother's footsteps and continue the karate legacy. Thank you Mr. Michael for the amazing human being that you are!
Eternally Grateful,
Mehak Talwar
Olson’s Martial Arts journey began at Kickaros in March of 2022. He was three and a half when we (his parents) first decided to enroll him because we wanted him to become more confident and learn to speak up. His preschool teacher had expressed that he never spoke in class and we wanted to help him feel comfortable using his voice and standing up for himself. We reached out to Mr. Michael regarding options since Olson was still on the young side, and he quickly scheduled a free individual lesson to assess our son’s readiness. We greatly appreciated this approach and the honest assessment since no one wants to sign a child up for an activity before they are ready.
During Olson’s time as a white belt Mr. Michael encouraged him to yell louder and would have him demonstrate moves as a new student to help his confidence grow. Before we knew it, Olson was ready for his first belt test. The look of pride in our son’s eyes when he earned his yellow belt confirmed that we had made the right decision. His confidence exploded as he went on to earn his orange and green belt over the next year and half.
In early 2024, we noticed Olson was having a difficult time with new situations and had developed a fear of failing. His teacher at the time informed us he was freezing up and becoming upset in class when asked to try a new activity. He was also ready to advance to the older class at Kickaros but seemed anxious and would not make the change. We approached Mr. Michael with this and asked if there was something he could do to help our child overcome his fears as we wanted Olson to understand failing at something the first time is ok and to just keep trying. Mr. Michael immediately came up with a plan to have Olson be his “special helper” in the older class as a way to encourage him. Olson was thrilled with this plan and by the end of the class he was participating with the other children and came out with a huge smile on his face. Over the next few weeks, Mr. Michael continued to have Olson “help” while slowly transitioning him to be a regular student in the class. Using Martial Arts as a way to overcome his anxiety related to trying new things has led to Olson enrolling in swim lessons (something he has always been nervous to try). We are confident that he is going to have a smooth transition to a new school later this year and that the tools he has learned at Kickaros will be a part of that success.
Olson is now a blue belt and in addition to his increased confidence and decreased anxiety he is showing leadership skills. We often find him teaching his younger sister Martial Arts moves at home, encouraging her, and discussing her feelings of frustration in an attempt to help her manage big feelings. The other day, while at the park, Olson encountered a younger child who was struggling on the equipment. He stopped and took the time to encourage this child to keep trying and once they succeeded he praised how strong and brave they were. We can’t wait to see what the next year of Martial Arts brings for Olson’s growth and development.
Thanks Mr. Michael and Kickaros!

James has always been a fun loving, kind, energetic boy. As he has gotten older we wanted to find an activity that not only helps channel that energy but also helps him grow as a person.
Karate has allowed James to be more confident in who he is and build upon his strengths while having fun. When he first started class he was shy and quiet as he didn’t know anyone and was trying something completely new.
Now a year later, he walks in strong, greets everyone with a smile and is excited to show Mr. Mike his “muscles.” Watching him excel and continue to learn has been a joy as his mom. He now looks forward to trying new things, loves learning and showing me all the new karate moves from class. The only thing I want as a parent is to see my child happy and well adjusted. Having this group activity in a fun and safe environment has really allowed our son to just be the best version of himself. We just couldn’t be more proud of how far he has come!
Super Thankful,
Kristy Gaudino
Jacob joined Kickaro's 3 years ago. I signed him up because I wanted him to learn a sport and spend less time on his electronics. When we took him for his 1st tryout class, he felt he wasn't good enough…He felt that he couldn't do the moves the other kids did…He didn't want to keep taking the class.
After a couple of months of hard work-Jacob got better and better! He leveled up in his belts so quickly that I was amazed.
He became more confident in his karate class and school! Mr. Michael also gave him the confidence to keep going and keep doing better when he just wanted to “give-up”
Jacob is now a brown tip belt, and he can't wait to earn his black belt. He is now even helping Mr. Michael with teaching the younger kids. We are so proud of him!
One Super Proud Mom,
